Picoactuator® Piezoelectric Crystal

Multi-Axis and Piezo Linear Actuators

The motion of a Picoactuator® piezoelectric crystal is highly linear and almost hysteresis-free. This allows highly repeatable bidrectional positioning, even without additional position metrology or closed-loop control. Therefore, the Picoactuator® technology is ideal for highly dynamic scanning with low electrical power consumption.

Picoactuator® piezo actuators can be configured as longitudinal or shear actuators, allowing the construction of particularly compact multi-axis actuators. The actuators are based on lead-free, single crystal material, which has a highly linear, hysteresis-free characteristic, but with small piezoelectric coefficients. The crystalline material allows for heights of up to 20 mm and maximum travel ranges of up to ±1 µm. The piezo voltage is -500 to +500 V.

Customization

Picoactuator® stack actuators are manufactured in a variety of shapes. Depending on the application, they can also be assembled with adapted ceramic or metal end pieces, additional coating, temperature sensors, etc. On request, we will gladly offer you customized products.

Inner Hole

With an inner hole a preload can be applied for dynamic operation. In optical applications the inner hole is used as clear aperture.

Special Ambient Conditions

All piezo actuators can be designed for UHV environments to 10-9 mbar. In this case, they can be heated out at more than 100 °C and be equipped with suitable stranded wires. For operation in magnetic fields, the electrical contact metals are selected accordingly.

Assembling Technology

PI Ceramic integrates piezo ceramics into the customer’s product. This includes both the electrical contacting of the elements according to customer requirements and the mounting of components provided by the customer, as well as the gluing or the casting of the piezo ceramics.

Electrical Connections

Standard contacts for piezo actuators are 100 mm stranded wires or soldering points. For each piezo element, different wires acc. to the AWG standard are used. Please observe the soldering instructions for each product.

Variable End Pieces

PI Ceramic has suitable tips and bases with standard dimensions in stock and mounts them prior to delivery. Possible tip designs are flat or spherical tips made e.g. of metal, ceramics, glass or sapphire. Application-specific end pieces can be manufactured on request.
